about

The Serenade Op. 22 is generally well known in its final version for strings alone. It is less known that the version written two years earlier (1873) was for octet with piano. This latter allows the work to keep a chamber mood with a feeling of intimacy and a density that then seem to recall Mozart. The other Serenade, the Opus 44 for winds alone, was transcribed by the bassist František Hertl for the Czech Nonet, which, since its founding in 1924, has had more than one hundred contemporary scores dedicated to it, including works by Lutoslawski and Martinů. We owe the transcription for double wind quintet of three Slavonic Dances, originally for piano four hands, to the clarinettist of the Prague Wind Quintet, Vlastimil Mareš. The reintroduction of winds in Opus 22 decks it in pastoral colours and shows that its destination was more rural than urban. The presence of strings, on the other hand, in Opus 44, adds a real instrumental sophistication in terms of richness of timbre, recalling Mozart and even Schubert. Serenades of Bohemia, not for the bandstands of Carlsbad but for Mozart’s Prague residence, Villa Bertramka.

Awards: Choc by Le Monde de la Musique, 10 by Répertoire, Recommended par Classica, 5 by Diapason

"We are charmed from the beginning to the end without reserves. The musicians interpret this music with the most refreshing naturalness and enthusiasm. Rarely the classical essence, the rustic simplicity and the character intrinsic of this chamber music were shown with such exhaustive enquiry." (Répertoire, Avril 1999)
